Unleash the Sledgehammers!

The Phi Gamma Delta House at the University of Chicago has begun its transformation!  The hammers are swinging and the dust is flying.  Demolition is the first exciting step in the construction phase of the project and, in many ways, it marks the beginning of a key phase of design.  With the interior spaces stripped of their plaster and drywall, the design team is able to finally understand the inner workings of the building.  We see the bones, the various building systems and we are given an up-close and personal look into how the building ticks.  With that new understanding, we are able to re-calibrate and sink our teeth into the design process once more in a more direct and meaningful way.  Abstract concepts, at this stage, now become rooted in real space and are able to be refined in more direct and tangible ways.

Although many understand the role of the Architect to exist within the studio and on paper, the environment depicted below is often the scenario in which many of us find ourselves regularly.  Our ability to enrich the design throughout the various phases of a construction project can make the difference between a good project and a great project.  It also opens the door to more cohesive and productive dialogue between the design team and the talented construction team.  The creative side of our profession is what drives us at Ellipsis.  But it doesn't end when construction begins.  When demolition begins, the design of a project has only hit its stride.  It's a dirty job but somebody's got to do it.  We're glad that 'somebody is us!

Please enjoy a glimpse at the organized chaos of demolition provided below and check in regularly for updates on this exciting rehabilitation project!
